If you're following us on Tumblr or Facebook, you have no doubt already seen some of Diana's work. Under the name AndyAlbarn, this young Russian artist has been sharing some of the very best portraits of Garrett we've seen. In a few bold strokes of dark on dark tones, she manages to convey the essence of the character.
For the first Fanart Friday of the new year, we're pleased to turn the community spotlight on AndyAlbarn! As if we needed an excuse to showcase more of her work...
Hi Diana! Tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm 20 years old, I live in Russia. I am currently studying at the Art college. I love to play video games, read books and of course draw. If you're interested in my works, you can find me on DeviantArt.
How long have you known you were an artist?
Well, perhaps I started drawing from an early age... But I realized that I wanted to do it all my life four years ago, when I went to art school.
How would you describe your style?
Honestly, I think I do not have a particular style, each piece works out completely different. I do not like small details in drawings. I paint quickly and try to convey the image with minimal efforts. I hope I can answer this question in the future, but for now I just try and learn, still looking for my style.
What's your favorite artistic medium?
I use anything and everything I can get my hands on. I can't pick just one. I work with oils and digital art most of the time. They each give such a different look and feel to the artwork. I love trying new techniques. I can't truly tell which would be my ultimate favorite, I'm just a beginner.
Describe your artistic process.
My artistic process is always simple. My best work comes when I enjoy the process and do not think about the result. As a rule, work will show that. I do not have a special structure for the job in advance, I never have ideas, they come in the process. I can tell for sure I could never draw without music. If I draw a character from a movie, I need music from this movie. If I draw Garrett, I need soundtracks from Thief.
What inspires you to do fan art?
In the learning process, I'm too busy with my own ideas and characters. Fan art for me is a kind of vacation, I can draw already invented character from my own point of view.
What specifically attracts you about Garrett and the world of Thief?
Thief is one of the most stunning and atmospheric games that I have ever played. I always appreciate atmosphere first in games. Thief has awesome music, interesting dialogues, charismatic character, amazing world, what else is needed!? The new Thief has become the most anticipated event for me.
What other fandoms do you belong to? What other characters, games, books or movies inspire you?
I'm a big fan of the Star Wars universe. I love westerns and classic horror movies. As for games, Alan Wake, Fable, Prince of Persia and Dead Space are favorites. I could share a lot of books but it would take a long time, I will just say that my favorite genres are fantasy and steampunk.
Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring artists?
I probably still do not know enough to say anything inspiring, but I would like to tell all beginner artists, including myself, that you should always do what you like and never get down to business that does not inspire you.
