Introducing the Dawn Engine

The studio has been hard at work, and we’re proud to announce today Dawn Engine™, our game engine designed exclusively for PCs and the new generation of consoles.

In the past, we’ve relied on existing engines for our games. But in the end, we found that our creative vision was somehow limited. So we decided it was time for us to invest in creating an engine tailored for our needs.

The result of this work is the Dawn Engine. Based on a heavily modified version of IO Interactive’s Glacier™ 2 engine, it represents the beginning of a new era for us. Our ambition is to build upon and improve both the visual and immersive artistry in our games, whilst also strengthening both the gameplay and storytelling experiences we strive to create.

We wanted to share a first glimpse of what we aim to achieve, with a screenshot taken directly from the Dawn Engine. Keep in mind – despite any hints you may pick up from this image, this screenshot was only taken in order to display the level of detail and artistic fidelity that is possible with the Dawn Engine.

As you can imagine, the Dawn Engine will form the cornerstone for all Deus Ex Universe projects at Eidos-Montréal. Some of you have had concerns that “Universe” meant “MMO”. Rest assured, it does not.

Deus Ex Universe is the name we are giving to the fictional world and the rich lore we are creating for it, which will of course include core games, as well as any other projects that will help bring the world of Deus Ex to life. We won’t go into too much detail for now, but what we envision is for our projects to have meaningful ties to one another, in order for them to strengthen and deepen your experience within this Universe.

I honestly cant wait for this game, DE:HR has been one of my favourite games since its release, I just did it again in the last few days in fact lol.
At least there is a bright side to it being a few years minimum till this game hits steam, I'll be able to hopefully have a better graphics card by then to run it to its full potential :D


BOBBYROONEY, you have no idea what you are talking about. I created an account just to say that.


Je-Saist: I don't think they use OpenGL. It's a very bad API for huge programs. Probably Dawn Engine is designed for Direct3D12 and Mantle. A Direct3D11 renderer is also possible.

HSA is an open infrastructure.
OpenCL is not a good solution for games. The code portability is limited. SPIR will help this but HSA is a much more robust solution.


I can only give a straight answer to your first point: It's most likely running on DirectX (or rather Direct3D). The level of detail has nothing to do with the API used.


Okay: multiple questions here.

First: what rendering API was this particular screenshot taken against? The level of detail would suggest either OpenGL 4.x, OpenGl 3.x, or possibly OpenGl ES 3.x.

Second: Will this revamped engine enable native ports into Unix-Like environments such as Linux.

Third: Is Eidos testing this engine against the ATi, AMD, Intel, and Nouveau driver sets; or only against the Nvidia-GLX and Catalyst driver sets?

Fourth: Will Eidos be hiring any employees who will be tasked with working to improve performance of the Gallium3D stack; or to identify and patch compatibility or performance issues directly with drivers?

Fifth: Will this new engine support physics compute offloading into a non-proprietary HSA stack such as OpenCL.


Looks an awful lot like Doom 3.


This how you plan on building to a Wii U pad and even try and link the Vita as a PS4 pad as I read before?


I thought DE:HR was amazing. I really hope we get mod tools so community story telling can happen with the new game. I would buy community DLC if, with mod tools, it could be on par with some of the storylines of DE:HR.


In my opinion you shouldn't use Chromatic Aberration.

That is some great news, and the screenshot looks really good. I've been a fan of Deus Ex since the first game, I loved Human Revolution, and I can't wait what you guys will bring to the table with Deus Ex Universe! :-) Also, it's great to hear it confirmed that Universe, doesn't mean MMO, or anything like that, haha.
