The Future Vision for Deus Ex

Posted by David Anfossi

As promised, I'm back to share more news about our Eidos-Montreal studio and what the teams are working on here. We currently have several games in development including the upcoming Thief, but today I will focus on two particular announcements both relating to the future of Deus Ex.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a critical and commercial success, and from this game an amazing franchise has been revived. We are fully committed to Deus Ex here at Eidos-Montreal, we’ve already learnt so much and we have many new ideas for the future that we are actively working to develop.

So first up, I am delighted to announce that we have confirmed a ship date for Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut. We will be releasing the game on October 22 (25 in PAL regions) on the Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Over the last 18 months, the team has been working very hard on the development of the Director’s Cut. With this edition, we gave the team the envious task of pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity to explore something we believe will become a big part of the future of the franchise, the second screen experience. When the game launches, players will have the opportunity to experience Human Revolution in a new and unique way through SmartGlass, the PSVita and the Wii U GamePad. I look forward to hearing your feedback on the Deus Ex forums.

And we are taking things further.

I’m really excited to let you know that we are working on an ambitious idea which we’re calling

The concept behind Deus Ex: Universe is to create an ongoing, expanding and connected game world built across a generation of core games. It’s a commitment on our part to deliver meaningful content that expands the franchise on a regular basis and to deliver a deep conspiracy that will span several connected Deus Ex games, creating a more immersive and richer experience than ever before. Deus Ex: Universe will include PC and console games, but also additional Deus Ex games and experiences available in other media such as tablets, smartphones, books, graphic novels, etc... You might have seen the name pop up recently in the press – well this is what it’s all about.

I’m pleased to confirm that we are already into production of the starting point for Deus Ex: Universe with a new game for PC and next-generation consoles. We’re very excited about it at the studio and I wanted to let you know that most of the team behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution is already working hard on this new game. It took us four years to learn how to create a unique Deus Ex experience with Human Revolution and it was important for me to keep this knowledge within the franchise.

I want to leave you with a piece of concept art from our next-gen Deus Ex game that shows trans-humanism segregation, which is a backdrop to our vision for the next Deus Ex. It represents a "ghetto-city' voluntarily built in order to separate the classes. The people in this segregated class have reshaped their environment, nostalgic for their ideal of Cyber Renaissance. This dark and dystopian vision sets the tone for things to come in Deus Ex.

For now, I hope you are excited about the future of this game that we love so much. Deus Ex is coming to next-gen, it’s early so don’t expect to hear much more from us just yet, but I wanted you to know.

I'm very excited as a developer and gamer!

Great new indeed, that the DE franchice is going to expand...I played through the old DE 1 years ago and found the game fantastic (and it still is for its era), then I played DE2 and, well, I liked it EVEN better than the first game, though there was some game design issues that I did not agree, but the story and the Whole atmosphere of DE2 was in mho even better that the first game. Right now I am playing DE HR and..whoaaw..its even better (and not just visually, that´s hardly surprising given the latest game is from 2011 in comparison with 2000 and 2004 respectively for the two earlier titles). DE HR is a truly great game, though again there are some design issues that I don´t agree with (mostly the somewhat annoying boss fights - though the fight with Namir was better and rather interesting in comparision with the other boss fights). However DE HR has a lot of improvement over the earlier games, and as I stated earlier, not just visually. Most of all I enjoyed that the streets of various cities and locations (mostly Detroit and Heng-sha) seemed vibrant and alive, while the streets of New York, Paris, Seattle and the Cairo Arcology in the two earlier games seemed rather "empty". Only few NPC´s in comparison with the teeming street life of DE HR. Great Work with DE HR and very well thought out Visuals...love that cyberpunk renaissance look. All in all : The DE game is the ultimate cyberpunk vision, the same way that the also fantastic Mass Effect series is the ultimate Space Opera. Those two Sci-fi RPG series is in mho the greatest game stories EVER told (and unfortunately there ain´t many RPG in Sci-fi setting around, but those two series, DE and ME, make up for that by being, well just the Greatest game franchise at all). So it is indeed great new that DE is going to be expanded upon, but one thing I would like to know : Is the original DE - the conspiracy and DE - Invisible War, going to be "remade" with your new game-engines ? In one way I would love to see a remake of those two great games with improved visuals and gameplay, but on the other hand I also have some trepidation at the thought. For example there is an unfortunate amount of remakes of old succesfull movies, that Hollywood managed to screw up ! So I am somewhat cautious of the idea, but then again : Would love to see a welldone remake of the two earlier games..oh and agree with WHAILOR...the music of all 3 DE is a part of the greatness...fantastic atmospheric music ! Listen to the tracks from all 3 games regularly...so mood inducing :) Finally thxs for doing a great job with DE HR and keep up the good Work...

Hey Guys,

The only thing I really hope for is for seeing some part of a future DE game being set in Australia. As an Australian gamer I feel that my country is very unrepresented or misrepresented (1980s wild australian mad max stereotype) in video games since the year dot which is very untrue in the cities (most urban people in Australia are like urban Canadians if that helps).

Australia is going through some interesting political times right now such as tough boarder protection and government economy shifts and are big in our primary production and raw elements industries. I see my country as being a rather interesting setting to be with in the next few decades. Though I live in Canberra, I see that maybe Melbourne, Victoria, would be a great place to look at in your design process due to it's aesthetic atmosphere as Heavily 19th century Victorian/21st century Ultramodern Arcitectual styles, European Weather during the colder season (not snow just rain.. lots of rain).

Right now Melbourne is going through a building boom with infrastructure developments and urban consolidation of the old factories. just look up images of melbourne streets and alleyways to find out (looks similar to williamsburg in Brooklyn, Skyscrapercity dotcom is best.)

Anyway I hope you consider my idea. (there are shitloads of Australians in Canada btw (lived there in 2012) probably not that difficult to find some Australians willing to take part in voice acting... just let them be able to make up some of the jargon or slang in the writing)

Cheers, Retdelswizdog

I can not wait to see what you guys do with universe! HR for me was the best stealth game I have ever played with the freedom and creativity do play as you like I thoroughly enjoyed getting every trophy available I used to hold mgs 1 and 2 as my top stealth games but you perfected the genre Ijust hope you ddon't go the same way as thief by limiting where you can and can't go by using set pieces for climbing up ect. Very excited the ps4 is the only platform for me to enjoy your next game :D

Also the OST is superb.. really puts you in the mood for some stealthy takedowns, just awesome.

Just dl'd the Directors cut to try the new integration n boss approaches. Def a fan tho, played thru HR numerous times and even have the coat. HR is an excellent modernization of the old one and much improved IMHO. I look forward to more in this new revamped setup.

I absolutely love Deus Ex games since the very first one and have always looked out and played any new title which comes out (for PC) and they've been always great. And Deus Ex Human Revolution so far was the best of the series. I still play it now and then. And the music - I always loved the music in Deus Ex games, it was always the best and I don't mean only the music of the game, but also the music in the game (you know, like in the bars or clubs there and so on). And music of Deus Ex Human Revolution is one of my most favorite music scores of all time. I have it in fact on a CD I bought and even on my USB stick and play it often and never get tired of it, it's just that great.

Love what you're doing and can't wait for another Deux Ex title!

liquidcyberpunk

Thank you guys so much for all your hard work!

I hope it takes a bit more atmosphere from Human Revolution than the original Deus Ex. I absolutely loved the atmosphere of the richness and perfection on the outside, with lots of corruption under the hood, so to speak. The completely black dystopian atmosphere of original Deus Ex didn't seem interesting or complex enough for me. Good luck with the next game!

That concept art that you linked, it can't be displayed because of errors. Can you please give another link?
